ABOUT THE AUTOMN WORKSHOP 2015

HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE

BEING PRESENT IN OURSELVES CHANGES AND IMPROVES THE QUALITY OF OUR LIFE: HEALTH, RELATIONSHIPS, WORK AND CREATIVITY.

I have to thank the gods for granting me the opportunity to work with some many people in my life. In Europe, Mexico and Japan, I have always been astounded, even obsessed, by the incredible paradox mankind represents for me: each individual is unique and yet we all have the same basic fears and misunderstandings about ourselves, independently of our cultural background.

Throughout an experience of more than three decades of counselling, I have learned to acknowledge that the main causes of grief, anxiety and frustration in life, are associated to four primary topics: material security, emotional fulfilment, socializing or relating to other people, and meaning of life. Who can invent a new one?

Each of these topics includes three different levels. Material security can refer to trouble with money, work or success in life. The emotional topic offers three main areas of difficulties: emotional disturbances coming from troubles in childhood, sexual complications, and difficulties of adequacy in life due to emotional upheavals. Serious emotional disturbances produce depression, anxiety and incapacity to deal with life.

Socializing and relating includes communication and intellectual skills, interpersonal relationships (all kinds of partnerships), and talents to find our place in groups and society in general. The last topic, meaning in life, concerns self-assurance to be able to stand our ground in front of other people, the capacity to express ourselves in a creative way, and faith or the firm belief that we have a mission to accomplish in this life.

Those interested in astrology can recognize in the above summary the four elements and the twelve signs and houses of the natal chart; but what matters is that we are talking about archetypes, the basic needs and expressions we all share as human beings.

In any case, after some many years of witnessing people struggling with their troubles and trying to help them find their path in life (as well as my own), I can proclaim that the only way to achieve fulfilment in life is to be present in ourselves. And this seems so elementary and simple that we all neglect it.

In this world of dispersion and distraction the most essential and elementary task becomes the most difficult. To become present in myself means that I am there, at the time and place I am, totally aware of myself. There, Socrates unique precept, Know Thyself, becomes the most useful advice for mankind. But we have been deaf to this Delphic commandment; we think that knowing ourselves means trying to become what we are not, or even worse, rejecting what we really are.

If we know ourselves, we cannot fail to be present to ourselves, because knowing, in this sense, means seeing and recognizing; we cannot lose sight of ourselves. The problem is when we only see our ego and not what we are; we tend to be trapped in the story we tell about ourselves. The Moon (ego) usurps the role of the Sun (our essence, real Self), we think we are there but we are not.

In this workshop, my goal is to propose a reflection and a method to find a way out of the traps of the ego (Moon) and, then, discovering the Self (Sun). The Sun is the heart, in normal circumstances, we do not need to pump the heart, it beats of its own impulse the same way as the Sun radiates with its own light.

We will explore the lessons of the most important teachers of acting that helped to develop the talent of the best actors we all know. What for? Because we all are the main actor of the formidable and beautiful play our own life is. My theory is that the teachings of the great masters of acting correspond, nowadays, to what Socrates preached 25 centuries ago. In modern terms: act always real. And to be real, I add, can only be possible if we are there, witnessing how life expresses itself through us.

Allow me to end up this invitation to our workshop with two anecdotes. The first is about a woman I admire and with whom I have been working for more than twenty years; we lately explored the theme of being present in herself. Yesterday she came to her session and told me this: “I have terrible troubles with my brothers and sisters, disappointments and worries with my three daughters and a difficult relation with my husband. But this is my reality, I have to learn how to be happy with what I have, learn and do my best. This is my life. I feel so relieved to say this.”

The second anecdote is about a young woman I saw many years ago in the Metro is Paris, maybe 40 years ago (Im getting old!). She was singing a song in Spanish, maybe l was the only one who could understand the lyrics, and she was begging for money. She was blind but her face was radiant with happiness. At the time I have no idea what being present with oneself meant, but I made the pledge to myself that the goal of my life would be to reach that state of happiness.  I only remembered two words of the song in Spanish: linda Susana (beautiful Susan); today I decided to look for a song with those words on the internet. I found it. The composer and singer is Jose Feliciano, a Porto Rican who happens to be blind! It is a salsa melody which sounds funny but the lyrics are a poetic, full of light. The blind young woman was singing it with the Beethoven melody: Ode of Joy! (the end)
